Jean Baptiste Lang House - The Lang House was donated to the City of Mandeville by the Jourdan family after Hurricane Katrina. The storm caused significant damage, and the Mandeville community rallied behind its salvation. The city provided funds to move the Lang House from Lakeshore Drive six blocks inland to the beautiful Kierr Gardens, which was donated by the Kierr family. The salvation of this modest cottage was a pivotal point in the direction of our town. The Old Mandeville Historic Association accepted the task of breathing new life into this quintessential Creole beauty. The Jean Baptiste Lang House now rests at 605 Carroll Street and serves as a museum and multi-functional community space. The Lang House officially opened its doors to the public in December of 2014, at which time the majority of restoration had been completed but further progress is ongoing.
Over the ten year history of OMHA we have completed significant research on Mandeville's unique history. The Lang House Museum is operated by OMHA volunteers and free guided tours are offered during Lang House business hours. The Lang House is listed in Google Map searches as a "point-of-interest" and as a result, people from all parts of, Louisiana, the US and the world have visited to take the tour.
Historic Site Plaque Program - The intent of this program is to promote appreciation of our cultural and architectural heritage through the identification of historical structures, resulting in an accurate guide to our past through our surviving buildings. The historic site plaque is the 'on the street' visual component and is at the very heart of the program making history evident and accessible. Based on the 2009 Mandeville survey of historic properties by Sally Reeves and further evidence from archival and land records research, such as that done by OMHA volunteers, each individual plaque will include a circa date of construction and can also include a name based on historical information if applicant wishes. Criteria for inclusion are any of the following:
Listed in the 2009 survey by Sally Reeves
Construction prior to 1950, with supporting research
Architectural integrity or interest
Site of historically significant event or person
Summer History Camp - Each summer OMHA conducts a History Camp for 2nd to 4th grade children. It is an opportunity for them to learn about local architecture, traditions and culture.
Mandeville Home Tour - Each year different homes in Mandeville open their doors to the public for our Mothers Day Home Tour. We will hold our tenth Home Tour this year with some of Mandeville's most significant homes to be included. For OMHA, it is our source for operating revenue for the year.
Quarterly Historical Lectures - Four times during the year OMHA invites speakers from the professional community and local universities to speak to our members and guests about their expertise in local and Louisiana culture and history.
