Opera Theater of Pittsburgh

A nonprofit organization

Opera Theater of Pittsburgh presents innovative opera, producing American works, reinterpretations of older works, and new works, for the widest possible audience. Opera Theater focuses on diversity in programming and casting, on crossing boundaries and bringing together talents from all the arts, on encouraging new talent, and on broadening audiences through outreach and education, to create a body of work that is original, entertaining, contemporary and relevant.

In 2012, Opera Theater reinvented itself as a summer festival, presenting three weeks of opera, concerts, recitals and cabaret at The Hillman Center for Performing Arts set in beautifully landscaped grounds in Fox Chapel. SummerFest 2013 was held from July 6-21 at the historic Art Deco Twentieth Century Club in Oakland. Performances included new productions of Offenbach's Tales of Hoffman-Retold, Sondheim's A Little Night Music, Mozart's The Secret Gardener/La finta giardiniera, Hagen's Shining Brow, and a world-premiere mini-opera series Night Caps International. SummerFest returns to the Twentieth Century Club in July 2014, with new productions of Ariadne on Naxos, The Merry Widow, The Fantasticks, Happy Hour! (new pop-up opera commission), A New Kind of Fallout (workshop of a new commission inspired by Rachel Carson), The Jumping Frog of Calaveras County (for families), and the SummerFest Recital Series.
