Orleans Audubon Society

A nonprofit organization

The Orleans Audubon Society is a local, 100% volunteer organization, dedicated to conserving wildlife and wild places of the southeastern U.S. and to fostering an appreciation of nature and the environment. Founded in 1949, this Chapter of the National Audubon Society provides environmental education and wildlife conservation services to southeast Louisiana.

The Orleans Audubon Society's activities include environmental education and bird and habitat conservation. Our conservation efforts are focused on restoring Louisiana's coastal wetlands and monitoring the Pearl River Basin. Our Environmental Outreach and Education programs range from outdoor adventure field trips, conservation and environmental lectures, outreach programs to schools, bird watching courses and workshops, and habitat restoration work days. Our wildlife ambassadors, a Great Horned Owl, Harris's Hawk, and corn snake are popular with audiences of all ages. The Ibis quarterly newsletter, features articles about local birding, gardening for birds and butterflies using native plants, habitat restoration, and endangered species and announces a wide array of environmental programs.

OAS's commitment to preserving habitat for birds is evidenced by our sanctuaries and habitat restoration partnerships. OAS's three sanctuaries preserve a variety of Louisiana habitats from bottomland, swamp, and marsh to barrier island forested ridges.
