PFLAG - Sierra Vista

A nonprofit organization

PFLAG promotes the health and well-being of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender persons and their families and friends through: Support of personal growth of participants; Education through our monthly meetings, programs, community-wide events, and our website; Advocacy of equal rights for the entire PFLAG community. PFLAG provides opportunity to dialogue about sexual orientation and gender identity and acts to create a society that is healthy and respectful of human diversity.

We provide support to those who identify as LGBTQ, their family, friends, and allies through both in-person meetings and online communities.

Our monthly meetings give people an opportunity to come together and connect face to face. These meetings allow those who have walked the path to share their insights with those just starting the journey. Regardless of whether that journey is that of a LGBTQ identifying person or that of an ally.

Our online presence provides additional ways to connect with us. We have a public Facebook page where we share community events and details about upcoming meetings. We have a closed Facebook group where we can have non-public discussions. We also have a confidential email address and phone number where a board member can be reached for those that need information or individual support.

Education

We host educational programs at many of our monthly meeting ranging from presentations on LGBTQ history to screenings of LGBTQ relevant movies/documentaries. Our website includes links to literature and resources from PFLAG National, PFLAG Tucson, as as well as the Sierra Vista Public Library. Additionally, PFLAG Sierra Vista has been working with local schools to ensure that 'Safe Zones' are available and that administrators and teachers have the necessary tools to provide a safe and supportive learning environment for LGBTQ youth.

Advocacy & Community Involvement

Advocacy in the community starts with having our voices heard. We maintain a positive presence by participating in local events such as the Festival of the Southwest, the West End Fair, the Family Fun Fest, the NAMI March, the Veteran's Resource Fair, and Bisbee Pride. We have also adopted a stretch of Snyder Boulevard in Sierra Vista as a way to give back to the community and keep our city clean.

Our outreach efforts include working with the Bisbee Pride Committee, the Gay/Straight Alliance Club at Buena Vista High School, and the Cochise Pride Club of Cochise College, and other organizations in the Sierra Vista, Cochise County area.
