The mission of Pittsburgh Public Theater is to provide artistically diverse theatrical experiences of the highest quality. Pittsburgh Public Theater also strives to serve, challenge, stimulate, and entertain while operating in a fiscally responsible manner. The Public shares its resources with the community through education and outreach initiatives intended for a wide range of people with the goal of expanding and diversifying the audience while enriching the community.

The Wall Street Journal this season, described Pittsburgh Public Theater as, "One of the most accomplished resident theaters on the East Coast." Currently in its 41st year, The Public's 6-play subscription series draws more than 85,000+ patrons to The O'Reilly for 230+ performances a year, making it one of Downtown Pittsburgh's liveliest destinations.The Public's lineups are a mixture of classics and contemporary plays, musicals of exceptional merit and world premieres, comedies and dramas, of grandeur and singularity. In addition to its mainstage performances and special events, The Public has a robust education program that includes the annual Shakespeare Monologue & Scene Contest, now in its 22nd year, as well as numerous and varied programs for children and adults. As a producing arts institution, The Public designs and builds its shows from scratch and provides meaningful employment for many talented professional actors and artisans living in the Pittsburgh region.
