Pomperaug Valley Garden Club

$4,940 raised by 69 donors

Since 1927, when the club was founded here in Woodbury, our members have been contributing their time and talents to educate and beautify the town of Woodbury. These include

  • Educational programs for the public on topics from invasive plants to floral design
  • Gardens and planters throughout town, including two registered “Monarch Waystations” to support pollinators and the award-winning Botany Trail at Flanders Nature Center and Land Trust — Click here for our new color brochure, "Woodbury Garden Tour: A Self-Guided Tour"
  • Guided wildflower walks for the general public on the Botany Trail each spring (check our website for this year's walk dates!)
  • Handmade holiday wreaths and swags for town buildings as well as small tray arrangements for Meals on Wheels, the Woodbury Food Bank and area nursing/convalescent homes

Recent projects include creation of a Serenity Garden at the Town Office Complex and, in a collaboration with the Old Woodbury Historical Society and New Morning Market, renovation of a 17th century medicinal herb garden at Woodbury's historic Hurd House.

Pollinator Pathway

The Club's newest initiative is partnering with the Woodbury Conservation Commission to develop a Pollinator Pathway along Woodbury's Main Street (Route 6). Pollinator pathways are "public and private pesticide-free corridors of native plants that provide nutrition and habitat for pollinating insects and birds. Even the smallest green spaces, like flower boxes and curb strips, can be part of a pathway." To learn more, visit our Pollinator Pathways website.

The Blue Star Memorial Marker

On May 4, 2024, the Pomperaug Valley Garden Club dedicated a Blue Star Memorial Marker on the North Green in Woodbury, joining a National Garden Club initiative that began in 1945 to honor members of the nation's armed services. The Blue Star Memorial Program pays tribute to "all men and women who have served, or now serve or will serve, in the United States Armed Services Forces."

PVGC Annual Plant Sale

Please don't forget our now legendary PLANT SALE, at Hollow Park on Saturday, May 16, 2026 from  8:30 am - 1 pm, rain or shine!

All of our beautification, conservation and education programs cost money. Your donations will allow us to continue to offer these programs and to bring many more, such as Pollinator Pathways, to the community. Thank you for your support — and we hope to see you soon in one of our gardens or at one of our programs!

The Pomperaug Valley Garden Club is a proud member of National Garden Clubs, Inc., the Federated Garden Clubs of Connecticut, Inc., and New England Garden Clubs, Inc.

Who We Are

Take a drive through Woodbury and chances are you will see the handiwork of dedicated garden club members!

George Washington Park, located at the southernmost end of town at the junction of Routes 64 and 6, is one of the many sites designed and maintained by club members. Other projects include plantings at the North and Cannon Greens, the Post Office Memorial Green, the entrance to Orenaug Park and Hotchkissville Green. Club members also maintain planters throughout the town with seasonal displays.

During the holiday season, the membership gathers to create the wreaths and swags that adorn the town buildings, as well as floral tray decorations for local nursing homes. The club supports horticultural and environmental education through college scholarships to high school seniors.

One of the club’s most enduring projects has been the development and maintenance of the Botany Trail, located at Flanders Nature Center and Land Trust in Woodbury. Established in 1965 by club members, the mile-long, award-winning Botany Trail winds through 45 acres of mixed woodlands, including a 1/4 acre pond and several small streams. More than 250 different wildflowers, many of them rescued from construction sites, exist along the trail.

In 2011, in collaboration with Flanders, the club established another project immediately adjacent to the trail: a “Monarch Waystation.” Designed to provide critical habitat and resources, both larval and nectar, for butterflies — and particularly migratory monarchs —the site is an officially registered habitat site. The club has since planted a second, smaller Waystation at the town library complex. A new "Serenity Garden" is currently being planned adjacent to the library.

During the past challenging year, we have continued to plant and maintain all the town gardens and pollinator habitats, and we have made our monthly programs available (on Zoom) to the public at no cost. We count on fundraising to fund these many educational and beautification projects. Your generous support will allow us to continue to educate, beautify and conserve.
