💧 What We Do
When people ask what the Pomperaug River Watershed Coalition (PRWC) does, we often pause before answering - not because the work is difficult to explain, but because its impact reaches far beyond any single program, project or year.

At its core, our work is about thoughtful, consistent care for water in our community. We care for the water that sustains our bodies, nourishes our food, shapes the beauty of the landscape where we live, and connects us to our upstream and downstream neighbors.

💧 Our Watershed
For more than 26 years, we have worked to safeguard the natural systems that make clean water possible for everyone who lives, works, and plays in the Watershed.

The Pomperaug Watershed spans 90 square miles across Southbury, Woodbury, and Bethlehem, Washington, Roxbury, Morris, and Watertown. It features nearly 134 miles of rivers and streams including the Pomperaug, Nonnewaug, and Weekeepeemee Rivers, which are closely connected to the aquifer that provides drinking water to neighbors in Middlebury and Oxford.

💧 What We Are Seeing
In recent years, it has become increasingly clear that the health of these vital water resources are under growing strain.

We have seen extreme flooding reshape landscapes, threaten homes and farms, overwhelm infrastructure, accelerate erosion, and carry pollutants throughout the watershed. We have observed invasive aquatic species spreading and water quality concerns increasing. These are no longer distant or hypothetical risks. They are here, now, and intensifying.

💧 Our Response
While the pressures have grown, so has our collective response. Alongside our partners, volunteers and donors (you), PRWC showed up again and again to monitor, restore, educate and protect - not with fanfare, but with persistence, science, and collaboration.

We work with local governments, businesses, scientists, environmental organizations, and residents to find practical solutions to protect and improve the health of the water in our communities. Together, we address the pressures of increasing land development, emerging contaminants, and the growing frequency of floods and drought so our communities are more resilient.

As federal and state funding become increasingly competitive and uncertain, we need you to take part in our mission to protect our shared water resources. Your support during Give Local sustains the programs that protect the water you rely on every day. Contributions are amplified through matching funds and challenge awards provided by partners including New Morning Market and the Connecticut Community Foundation.
