Using our mobile medical units, a Board Certified Urologist, a Sonora Quest phlebotomist, and support team, we travel throughout Arizona providing free/low cost prostate cancer screenings for men 40 and over, or younger if there is a family history of prostate cancer. One in six men will get prostate cancer in his lifetime. If detected early, the survival rate is nearly 100%. Our exit surveys reveal that over 50% of men would not have gotten their annual screenings if it weren't for our mobile units. Patients get a blood draw for current Prostate Specific Antigen levels (PSA), a DRE and consult. Results are sent to the patient and to our office where date is kept. Ex: In 2016, 3375 men were screened. 141 had high PSA levels, and 70 had abnormal DREs. Both can be indicators of prostate cancer.
"I did not consider my diagnosis a burden. Rather, I believe it is an opportunity for me to share my story and to drive awareness and education. Early diagnosis is the key to treatment and fighting this prevalent disease."
DERRICK HALL - PRESIDENT & CEO
I'm a 42-year old detective for the Tempe Police Department. On June 29, 2009, I was diagnosed with advanced stage prostate cancer. The cancer had spread beyond my prostate and after a 6 ½ hour surgery on July 14; the doctor was unable to remove all of the cancer. After being on hormone therapy for almost two years, completing five months of chemotherapy and 45 treatments of radiation, the cancer has now returned stronger than ever. The doctors said that my cancer was so advanced that it had probably been inside me for 3-5 years. The scary part was that there were virtually NO symptoms. Prostate cancer is practically 100 percent curable if caught early enough to be contained within the prostate. Early detection through an annual prostate exam will save lives and since my diagnosis I've tried to spread the word so that no one has to endure what I'm going through right now. "Please get tested. It'll be the best 15 minutes you ever invested in your future." ------- Tim Barber
We are very saddened to report that POP Board Member and Tempe Police Detective, Tim Barber passed away on Saturday, August 27th, 2011, after his 2-year struggle with prostate cancer
