Reckoning, Inc.

Reckoning Inc. is a nonprofit organization that traces the history and lasting impact of slavery in Kentucky. With the help of historians, genealogists, and storytellers, we are restoring Black family histories that were buried centuries ago when enslaved African-Americans had their names and families taken from them. 

This history is the legacy of our community and state. Understanding it more clearly will benefit all of us—Black and white, young and old, those searching for their family roots, and those just starting to learn the hidden history of slavery and those enslaved in Kentucky.

Reckoning Inc. seeks to connect contemporary African Americans with their enslaved ancestors in order to knit back together lost family histories and to preserve stories of perseverance and accomplishment. And every American—no matter their race—can experience this history on a more personal level, to better acknowledge and understand the profound impact and still potent legacy of slavery in this country.
