Regional Trail Corporation

A nonprofit organization

The mission of the Regional Trail Corporation (RTC) is to acquire, develop, manage and maintain appropriate trail and water corridors within southwestern PA in partnership with local trail chapters and councils to promote opportunities for recreation, volunteerism, education, tourism, economic development and historic and environmental conservation. The RTC recognizes that an integrated system of trails will provide a valuable recreational resource and enhance the quality of life in our region

The RTC is actively involved in the development of land trails in Westmoreland and Fayette Counties. Trail development typically begins with a feasibility study or other planning effort to determine if it is possible to build the trail. The next step is to work with the landowner and adjacent property owners on any necessary acquisition. The RTC is set up as a land-holding agency so the organization is equipped to insure properties for trail development and future trail use. Next is a design and engineering phase. Once all of that is complete then the trail can be constructed. The RTC is responsible for raising funds for all stages of the process. Funding sources include state and federal grant programs and private foundations. We work with local resources to gather as many in-kind contributions to development of the trail as possible. Sometimes this takes the form of a discounted acquisition price or construction being completed by a local municipality.
