More About Us

Thank you for your interest in SAFE and assisting survivors of abuse! A common misconception about our organization is that we are just an emergency shelter for people who need to flee an abusive situation. However, our organization provides support to survivors of domestic and sexual violence in so many other ways! As our mission states, we do provide shelter to survivors. We provide a safe and comforting atmosphere for families who need to escape imminent danger. Our shelter advocates solely exist to help transition families, sometimes including their pets, into and out of the shelter to ensure their time with us is free from danger and empowering for them. We also provide support for our clients via one-on-one supportive counseling, support groups, financial assistance, connection to other community resources, and crisis intervention support via our 24-hour Hotline. In addition, we provide advocacy services such as court accompaniment and/or assistance with obtaining and extending protective orders. Our advocates want to make sure our clients have as much support as they can provide in circumstances where they are required to tell their story, often resulting in better outcomes. Our services are available to adult men and women, as well as children through our Children's Program. Our Hispanic Outreach Coordinator and advocates provide the same services to the underserved Latino population in all five of the counties that we serve. Essentially, when a survivor comes to us with a need, we aim to fill it. All of our services are FREE and CONFIDENTIAL.

For those who are interested in volunteering and/or interning with SAFE, we have a Volunteer Training Program to equip our volunteers with trauma informed awareness so they can effectively serve our clients and, consequentially, their community. In conjunction with the Volunteer Program, our agency also offers Community Outreach through educational presentations for businesses and community partners, informational table set-ups, participation in awareness events and more. It is essential for us to ensure that the community is aware of our organization and the variety of services we offer so that survivors can receive the support they need. We are the only program within the five counties that we serve that provides both shelter and support for survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault. Domestic violence and sexual assault affects everyone, whether we know it or not. It may not be your story, but it could be the story of your family member, your friend, or even your coworker. Help us raise awareness and continue serving your community by investing in us. Ultimately, YOU can save a life and provide opportunity for a survivor to move forward and into a life free from abuse.

Testimonials

We often will ask clients to tell us what they think would have happened if we did not exist. We hear things such as the following:
"I probably would have gone back to my abuser because of my kids."
"I would have had to live in my car or on the streets."
"I might have been killed."
We at times hear very difficult stories. We exist to try to turn those stories into empowerment and healing for the client.
