Birding Trail at the Sankofa Wetland Park:

A Living Classroom for Environmental Education

At Sankofa Wetland Park, our Birding Trail is more than a path through restored wetlands. It is a living classroom rooted in curiosity, science, and community. As students walk the trail, they learn to identify bird species, observe ecosystems, and understand how wetlands protect their neighborhood from flooding and climate impacts. Through hands-on exploration, they strengthen critical thinking, literacy, and STEM skills in ways traditional classrooms often cannot provide.

With your support, we will expand this Self-Guided Birding Trail to include raised boardwalks, observation lookouts, and interpretive signage featuring scientific facts and QR-enabled learning tools. Developed in partnership with environmental scientists and community leaders, the trail will deepen climate literacy and expand equitable access to green space in the Lower Ninth Ward.

“When children fall in love with nature, they grow into adults who protect it.”
Rashida Ferdinand, Founder & CEO

Your GiveNOLA Day support helps us build a permanent educational trail where curiosity leads to conservation.
