The mission at Second Harvest Food Bank is to provide food to those in need within the eleven counties of northwest Pennsylvania while creating awareness and educating the community on the realities of hunger.
Second Harvest distributes grocery products through 384 agencies that include food pantries, soup kitchens, shelters and other charitable organizations.
We also work with program partners that join with us to distribute food through our Second Harvest programs including School Pantries, BackPack programs, Produce Express and Military Share distributions and the PA Senior Box programs.
Our Programs:
Produce Express
The Produce Express is a mobile distribution program that provides fresh, healthy produce, and shelf stable items to those who normally would not have access to it. Second Harvest continues to encourage healthier eating and better nutritional choices by offering a variety of items.
Military Share
Military Share, a Produce Express Program, is designed to provide fresh, nutritious foods for families with at least one member who is currently serving or has served in the Armed Forces.
Childhood Feeding Programs
The Second Harvest School Pantry Program provides food and other necessities to children and their families in safe, familiar locations within their school.
The BackPack Program provides nutritious, child friendly foods for students on Fridays to ensure that they receive proper nourishment on the weekends during the school year.
PA Senior Food Box Program
The U.S.D.A. provides food items for distribution to low income seniors to supplement what they can purchase on their own or receive from other food assistance programs.
Healthy Pantry Initiative
The PA Healthy Pantry Initiative (HPI) equips our food pantries with the tools they need to become a community resource for promoting healthy food choices and nutrition education. The program aims to combat chronic disease and improve the health of pantry clients.
Food Rescue & Meal Connect
Second Harvest Food Bank has been rescuing food since it's beginning in 1982. We now rescue food from approximately 200 donors and redistribute it to hunger relief agencies in 11 counties in northwest Pennsylvania. As a partner with Feeding America, we are now using their innovative MealConnect tool to orchestrate even more food rescues. This tool is designed to be a convenient, free, and safe way for businesses of any size to reduce wasted food and donate surplus meals throughout the community.
