Serenity Living Transitional Home (SLTH) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing services to youth and families living in poverty-stricken communities throughout Pittsburgh and occasionally Allegheny County. In addition to mentoring, and life stabilization services, SLTH offers young women between the ages of 18 and 23 a safe place to live and learn. SLTH prioritizes housing for youth that become homeless due to aging out of the foster care system. Understanding these young people have become homeless due to no fault of their own.
SLTH's two primary programs for the young adult population include transitional housing ("SLTH Residential Services") and Life stabilization mentorship ("Taking Youth Higher"). Located on the boarder of two Pittsburgh communities (East Liberty and Larimer), SLTH Residential Services has the capacity to house four young women at a time, and to serve an additional 20-30 in the Taking Youth Higher Program. Through both programs, participants receive life skills classes, financial literacy, and on-the-road drivers lessons.
The program's philosophy is to provide individualized, strengths-based attention to young adults who are teetering on independence-resulting in a blueprint to adulthood. SLTH is addressing an unmet need in the space of transitional and supportive housing services for young women. SLTH Residential Services blends real-world knowledge and expectations with the understanding that our service population requires additional nurturing, coaching and skill building in order to be successful at living independently.
SLTH had a very unique start. The founders, Ashley and Shawn Moorefield noticed the need for a housing program as they had been offering mentoring and social services to youth in the community. With no actual facility to open a transitional home, The Moorefield's took their two children and moved their family of four in with another family in order to use their own home to open SLTH. While the Moorefield's lived with a friend, almost an hour away, they commuted daily to volunteer at the transitional home. Since humble beginnings just three years ago, SLTH has housed 17 young women that would have otherwise remained homeless and services 90 youth in our Life stabilization program, preventing them from experiencing homelessness!
