Squirrel Hill Urban Coalition

A nonprofit organization

Powered by volunteers, we are a non-profit community development organization dedicated to preserving, improving and celebrating the quality of life in Pittsburgh's 14th Ward. We provide leadership to the community by studying and advocating positions on issues affecting our neighborhood vitality. Our process fosters community-based initiatives in the areas of education, public safety, transportation, parks /open spaces, and commercial, institutional & residential development.

Building on a community vision process and professional design for a key interstate "Gateway" to the community, the Coalition's Gateway Committee successfully brought about $710,000 streetscape improvements, including a welcome sign, lighting, planting, and art improvements not only at the gateway, but along the length of the community's Murray Avenue corridor. This past August, the Squirrel Hill Post Office Parklet had a brand new re-opening with much needed renovations. The Coalition completed 2 semester-long projects with two Carnegie Mellow University (CMU) School of Architecture classes including Urban Planning and Design and Real Estate Design and Development that focused on Forward/Murray corridor. These projects have generated exciting alternative visions to encourage future, positive investment along Forward Avenue and nearby sections of Murray.
