In 2001, Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Los Angeles (spcaLA) and the City of Long Beach opened Southern California's first public-private partnership in animal welfare: the P.D. Pitchford Companion Animal Village & Education Center, situated on 6.5 acres in El Dorado Park. Since that time, Long Beach Animal Care Services has transferred over 45,000 animals into the care of spcaLA.
Beyond adoptions, spcaLA works with Long Beach-area juvenile justice professionals, schools, and nonprofits to help break the cycle of violence, and promote empathy and compassion in our community with violence prevention and humane education programs. These include Teaching Love & Compassion (TLC), the spcaLA Court Diversion Program for Youth, and Animal Safety Net (ASN).
At the Village, spcaLA offers Pet Care Patch Workshops, Friends for Life Summer Camp, as well as disaster preparedness and law enforcement educational seminars, dog training, and a pet marketplace - all of which reinforce the human-animal bond and help to make Long Beach one of the most humane communities in the United States!
