Challenges and obstacles are a part of life. They are part of a journey to be navigated with the guidance and graces of the Holy Spirit. The past 8 months have brought numerous challenges that we are still working to overcome today. COVID-19 forced the suspension of Masses across our dioceses and now a slow return to a “new normal” of conducting operations in our parishes and schools. These times are teaching us what we are made of and how strong our faith family is. In true Yooper spirit, and following in the footsteps of our first bishop, Venerable Bishop Baraga, we are calling on ourselves and our neighbors to support our parishes, our priests, the sacraments, and the ministries that mark us as Catholics. Please contribute and be a champion of the Catholic faith in the U.P.! We will overcome these tough times. Your gift(s) will go a long way toward supplementing regular income, turning obstacles into opportunities, and focusing on the positives. Please join us on this journey and help us keep our essential ministries moving forward.
Baraga County Catholic Community is three parishes in one family. Sacred Heart of Jesus Church in L'Anse, MI; Saint Ann Church in Baraga, MI; and Most Holy Name of Jesus Church in Assinins, MI.
OUR VISION: We seek daily for the grace of God poured out in prayer and the sacraments to be the-best-version-of-ourselves both as individual believers and as a fellowship of the Body of Christ. We seek the lost by our hands-on outreach and unwavering evangelization efforts. Our one aim is to advance the kingdom of God by living the motto of venerable Bishop Frederic Baraga to do all we do for the greater glory of God, which is the "one thing necessary".
OUR MISSION: Growing Disciples - Seeking the Lost - and Advancing the Kingdom of God
The faith first came to this area when Fr. Rene' Menard was stationed here for a couple of years in the mid 1600s. In the late 1600s, Fr. Jacques Marquette passed through on his way to and from the Apostle Islands located near Ashland, WI. Then in the 1840s, the Venerable Bishop Baraga was stationed in our area and ministered to all who came to the upper peninsula of Michigan. He stayed for up to 14 years - the longest time he ever stayed in one place.
We are grateful to our past and present parishioners for living our rich and vibrant history -- who celebrated the sacraments in our parishes -- and in a multitude of other ways shared in the life of our faith community.
Our churches have been the center of our worship and prayer for roughly 150 years. During that time, many have found our parishes to be their spiritual home and our Baraga County Catholic Community their spiritual family.
