Student Writers Studio

Our vision is to develop confident, empowered student writers throughout the St. Louis area, enriching students through creative and academic writing opportunities. These opportunities include writing workshops, tutoring, mentoring, and youth publishing programs. Our programs involve group instruction and discussion, as well as individualized attention. All student interests are accounted for in any of our programs.

Student Writers Studio started in October 2016 and began its first program in January 2017. Since then, SWS has served over 75 students and partnered with several organizations, including Mission: St. Louis Beyond School, St. Louis College Prep, North Campus, and Expressus. Spoken word poetry has been our most popular workshop series because it gives students the opportunity to express themselves and to communicate a message of importance to them. We are gradually expanding our programs to help students have a greater understanding of writing, including short story writing and academic essay writing.

SWS is founded on writing center principles, meaning we focus on understanding students' language, recognizing their potential and listening to their ideas, and helping them know the different styles of writing they can use. We wear many hats to increase students' confidence in themselves as writers.
