Sustainable Pittsburgh affects decision-making in the Pittsburgh region to integrate economic prosperity, social equity, and environmental quality as the enduring accountability, bringing sustainable solutions for communities and businesses. SP carries out its mission through formal sustainability performance programs; professional development and technical assistance; and regional policy and educational initiatives.

Champions for Sustainability (C4S), a network for sustainable business solutions, brings together companies large and small to put sustainability into practice. C4S Programs include:
-Business Sustainability Officer affinity group: for professionals in the region charged with integrating sustainable solutions into their organization's operations. SP convenes this group regularly for training, networking, and sharing of challenges & best practices.
- CEOs for Sustainability: an outcomes-oriented peer group of 19 CEOs (and counting) who support and guide sustainability best practice among the region's highest performing companies and also come together to address key sustainability issues material to the region's competiveness and quality of life.
- Pittsburgh Green Workplace Challenge: a yearlong competition for businesses, nonprofits, municipalities colleges/universities, & K-12 schools in SWPA to track and measure improvements in the areas of energy, water, waste, transportation, and social equity (115 competitors to date). www.gwcpgh.org. - SWPA Sustainable Small Business Designation: 200 businesses participating in 36 communities
- SWPA Sustainable Business Compact: a rigorous pathway for mid to large size businesses to advance and publicly demonstrate corporate sustainability achievements.
- Sustainable Pittsburgh Restaurant: a sustainability performance programs for restaurants in southwestern PA. 64 establishments are designated sustainable www.sustainablepghrestaurants.org

Sustainable Community Development Network (SCDN), a network for sustainable community solutions, facilitates the building of new relationships, promotes and supports policies to accelerate sustainable solutions, and works to educate leaders and citizens about how to increase their use of sustainable practices here in southwestern PA. Programs that fall under the umbrella of SCDN include:
- Sustainable PA Community Certification: a sustainability performance program for municipalities that was recently taken statewide and is now managed jointly by Sustainable Pittsburgh and Pennsylvania Municipal League (61 certified sustainable communities) www.sustainablepacommunitycertification.org;
- Developments of Regional Importance: SP conducts Sustainability Assessments of these proposed developments to help advance sustainable development and identify areas for improvement. Five assessments are currently in the works.
- Soon-to-be-released Regional Sustainability Goals and Indicators Report provides a suite of measures of the overarching, regional issues that cut across our geopolitical boundaries of southwestern Pennsylvania, while tying together our individual and collective destinies. The indicators help focus the discussion on issues of paramount importance to achieving a truly sustainable future.
