The Heroes Among Us Foundation

Throughout my 7 year career as a college and career coach, I've had the privilege of working with some of the best and brightest students, each with unique dreams and potential. I pursued my Master's in School Counseling to better understand the complexities of guiding students toward fulfilling careers, especially when they face challenges like not seeing themselves represented in the fields they aspire to or feeling limited by their circumstances.

One experience that deeply impacted us was when Martin was invited to work with students in the Fire/EMS pathway. Engaging with these students, we saw firsthand the impact that representation and mentorship can have. We knew then that there was a significant opportunity to support these students—not just by volunteering, but by coaching and providing feedback that could truly make a difference in their lives.

This experience, combined with research, such as the University of Missouri study that found high school students are more likely to aspire to STEM careers when they see diverse professionals in those roles, solidified the vision. We realized that by applying this concept to a broader range of careers, we could inspire a generation of students to pursue their dreams, no matter their background.

This was one of the catalysts that led to the creation of the Heroes Among Us Foundation. Our mission is rooted in the belief that every student deserves to see themselves reflected in their future career possibilities. As the demographics of our city continue to evolve, it is crucial that our future workforce mirrors this diversity. By providing mentorship, diverse opportunities, and community support, we aim to cultivate a future where every student can thrive and contribute to a more inclusive world.
