Who We Are

The Moffatt-Ladd House and Garden is an historic house museum property owned and operated by The National Society of The Colonial Dames of America in the State of New Hampshire (NSCDA-NH) whose mission is education and preservation. The purpose of the Moffatt-Ladd House and Garden is to interpret American, New Hampshire, and Portsmouth history through the lives and possessions of the inhabitants of the house, both enslaved and free. It was the home of a signer of the Declaration of Independence from 1771 to 1785, and it was the home of two enslaved men who were among 20 signers of the 1779 Peitition of Freedom to the NH legislature. The museum is conducts tours, school and youth programs, public programs, and festivals, and publishes articles and books on the history and preservation of the house and its collections.
