The Neighborhood Academy

A nonprofit organization

Our mission is to break the cycle of generational poverty by preparing low-income youth for higher education. The Neighborhood Academy exists to provide a holistic college-preparatory education for students in grades 8-12 from low-income families. The Academy is dedicated to developing the minds, bodies, and spirits of our students so that they might become fully productive members of our society. By so doing, our students will break the cycle of generational poverty that has held them captive.

The Neighborhood Academy is the only private, college-preparatory high school (grades 8-12) in Pittsburgh that intentionally serves low-income, inner-city youth. Our unique approach includes an extended school day (8:00am-7:30pm), small classes, on-going communication with families, and a college-preparatory curriculum. We also provide counseling, transportation, three meals a day, and assistance with emergency needs like medical care. The breadth of our services is based on the belief that low-income students require support and structure outside of what is considered to be a 'traditional' school day. The Academy admits students of any race, gender, national/ethnic origin to all the rights, privileges, programs and activities generally made available to students at the school. It does not discriminate on the basis of race, gender, national or ethnic origin in administration of its educational policies, admissions, scholarship programs, or athletic and other school-based program.
