The Noble Neighbor

A nonprofit organization

Every child should have access to books they love and the authors who write them.

Author visits are unique, joyful experiences that reinforce literacy skills and spark new interest in reading – even among reluctant readers.

But authors typically only visit more affluent schools where they are likely to sell books. It’s a fundamental inequity that is disproportionately hurting children of color – especially Black children – in our community.

The Noble Neighbor brings world-class authors to meet in-person with kids who live and go to school in historically underserved communities throughout St. Louis, giving every child who participates a free copy of that author’s book to take home with them.

THE NOBLE NEIGHBOR

CONNECTS kids with specially-selected books and author visits that  get them excited about reading;

EMPOWERS children through programming that strengthens reading and writing skills, and boosts their confidence and sense of self-worth; and

INSPIRES kids to be the authors of their own life stories: to explore their own imagination, find their creative voice, and follow their dreams.

Since launching in 2019, The Noble Neighbor has given over 16,000 free books to kids and hosted 71 author visits, including beloved, literary legends like Jason Reynolds, Jacqueline Woodson, and Katherine Applegate; athletes like NBA superstar Chris Paul and trailblazing Olympian Simi Adeagbo; and celebrity TV host and actor Terry Crews.

Noble Neighbor author visits are unique, joyful experiences that are intentionally designed to get kids excited about reading, writing, and finding their own creative voices. It’s programming with proven impact.

According to a survey of 600 educators nationwide:

  • 91% said author visits motivate students to read more
  • 75% said they inspire creativity and expression
  • 70% said they motivate students to write more

These benefits are compounded when kids see themselves reflected in the stories they read and the artists who created them. As 90% of our students are children of color, we intentionally recruit writers and illustrators of color who are leaders in their field, providing powerful “if you can see it, you can be it” opportunities.
