The Westmoreland Museum of American Art

A nonprofit organization

The mission of the Westmoreland Museum of American Art is to enrich a growing public through innovative and collaborative approaches to the collection, preservation and presentation of American art.

Recently completing a major renovation and expansion project, the Museum is a destination that presents a unique look at American life. Built to inspire and engage, its a place for people from all corners of the world to gather and experience American art.

The Westmoreland opened its doors to the public in 1959, and is the only museum dedicated to American art in western Pennsylvania and an important part of the fabric of museums in the Pittsburgh area. The Museum explores American art with a significant collection of works by America's most notable artists, including Mary Cassatt, John Singer Sargent, Winslow Homer, Milton Avery, Sol LeWitt, and Donald Judd. Where the collection comprises singular important objects by internationally known American artists, it has great depth and breadth relating to regional schools in order to be a center for research on these artists and movements.

With the recent opening of a newly renovated facility, including expanded exhibition and education spaces, and a 14,000 square foot state-of-the-art cantilever east wing, The Westmoreland has become a museum of national stature.
