THISTL

THISTL (Trans Housing Initiative St. Louis) est. 2021, provides a range of programs designed to increase economic and housing stability for transgender and gender nonconforming (TGNC) individuals.

Since 2022, THISTL has distributed over $15,000 in mutual aid for rental and emergency assistance, including more than $8,000 during Winter 2026 alone. These funds are intended for the most marginalized community members, and a majority of the funds support Black trans women, who face disproportionate housing instability due to intersecting systemic barriers.

Since 2023, THISTL has delivered trans-affirming educational training to more than 12 local shelters and housing providers. Many of these are traditionally gendered spaces, including women’s shelters, which now have the tools and knowledge to more safely and effectively serve trans women and other TGNC individuals seeking shelter and transitional housing.

Also since 2023, THISTL has provided economic and financial wellness programming in partnership with community organizations, including first-time homebuyer education. 

All of these programs are paired with participant stipends to reduce barriers to participation and covers topics such as budgeting, banking, credit, and pathways for first-time homebuyers. THISTL is building consistent program infrastructure and partner coordination. These efforts are supported by growing internal systems to support participants, ensure equitable access, and strengthen long-term program sustainability.
