Town of Gorham Historical Society

A nonprofit organization

We are a small but mighty organization whose mission is to discover and preserve the history and historical artifacts involved in Gorham and surrounding communities, and educate the public to gain knowledge and understanding of the past and how it effected our communities. Enlightenment and understanding can help our communities to make decisions in a more positive and resourceful way. We offer tours, genealogy assistance, events and programs in conjunction with our neighbor, The Gorham Free Library. We also provide a day long workshop for local school children regarding the Civil War and its impact locally. The day is a mix of participation in demonstrations, historical reenactment, speakers, period music, hands on activities culminating in a funeral procession for a local Civil War soldier and his grave side service.

We have spearheaded a collaboration of smaller historical societies within Yates and Ontario Counties to be able to pool resources and provide educational opportunities for a broader audience. We recently provided programs on Rethinking Thanksgiving with Perry Ground and Metal Detecting with ROC Diggers.

Over the past three years we have increased our membership from the mid 70’s, to currently almost 200 members.

We have a very active FB page with just shy of 600 followers and likes, and a FBGroup over 700 members.
