Two by Two Character Development

The journey, now known as Two by Two Character Development, began with Kristin Woodward-Vaassen and her mother, Beverly Graves, both long-time elementary school teachers. Together, along with outstanding educators in the Dubuque community and national experts in character development, they began to focus on the critical need of restoring a culture of character within schools, communities, and in our society.

Two by Two programming revolves around eight core values: Fairness, Kindness, Respect, Responsibility, Empathy, Cooperation, Perseverance, and Citizenship. Two by Two® researched-based programs, including: Kindhearted Kids, Kindhearted Kids to the Rescue, Toolkits of Character, Kindhearted Kids Make a Difference, and the Family Toolkit of Character, were designed to capture a child's imagination by connecting the teaching of these core values with the love of animals. Involving animals directs instruction not only to the mind, but right to the heart.

Kindhearted Kids, our staple second grade program, is comprised of 5 one-hour lessons to teach Kindness, Respect, Responsibility, Empathy, and Two by Two's Golden Rule - "Treat ALL living things the way you want to be treated." During the first lesson, the magical reveal takes place. Each Kindhearted Kid receives their own stuffed cat or dog to take care of during the 5-week program. They find out how to be responsible pet owners by recording their pet chores, adding up costs, and more. They also learn about EMPATHY by seeing how alike people and animals really are.

What began in Kristin's basement has led to a 17-year journey during which Two by Two has become a well-respected nonprofit in our community and beyond.
