Ubuntu Village NOLA

A nonprofit organization

We are a Black-led, multi-racial group made up of parents, young people, and community members. We support and build power with those most impacted by systemic racism, violence, and incarceration. Instead of replicating these systems of oppression, "we keep us safe" by mediating conflicts in our neighborhoods, directly supporting families, and creating spaces for healing and mutual support - all while building power for long-term racial and economic justice. We know that true safety comes not from oppression and control, but from supportive communities where everyone is treated with humanity and has what they need to thrive. By taking care of each other, we’re creating the healthy village we all need and deserve.

Currently we have three core programs:

1. Parent Navigators in the juvenile courts. These peer advocates help families and young people understand the court process, actively participate, and push for alternatives to incarceration.

2. Integration Navigation Services to End Arrests and Detention (INSTEAD) identifies children and adults who are willing and appropriate candidates for the program shortly after an arrest. For those who would otherwise face charges, staff will recommend alternatives to incarceration and prosecution, including restorative justice.

3. NOLA Peace Ambassadors are community members who work to prevent conflicts from developing and intervening in potentially violent situations. They establish trust and credibility via personal ties and use strategies for de-escalation, such as mediation and outreach.
