Mehki's Story

Back in 2023, Mehki's mom began searching for a summer program. However, none of them felt like a fit until Variety. During the intake meeting, his mom expressed her concerns about how Mehki, an eight-year-old with autism, would integrate in program and make friends. Before long, her worries were put to rest. During his first day, he was timid around others, but that didn't last long. By the second day, he was excited to participate in all the activities camp had to offer, such as swimming, art, STEM, adaptive movement, and more! He happily approached others to play and has shared many laughs and smiles with them. 

Since then, Mehki, now an 11-year-old, attends our After-School Program throughout the academic year and enrolls in all our weekend retreats, a huge step for him because he spends three days and two nights away from home. He enjoyed bonfires, games, meals, and more with his friends. It was a new experience that allowed him to experience independence and build his self-confidence. The Variety team has loved watching him grow and express himself authentically in our programs.
