Who We Are

WEC was founded in 1971; a time in our country when very few people were predicting an environmental movement and within the first year WEC began advocating the practice of recycling. In 1989 WEC helped defeat the local routing of the Iroquois Pipeline, and in 1999 WEC was a part of a larger group that stopped the Sempra Power Plant project in New Milford. Washington was the first municipality in CT to ban the storage of fracking waste (2015) and one of the first to ban the use of single-use plastic bags at store check-out (2018). And just as importantly, WEC created an Environment Scholarship Fund and has awarded over $80,000.
