M. K. Brown was one of the founders of Pampa Texas. He came
from England to America in 1903 as an office manager for the White Deer Land
Company that sold 631,000 acres of the Texas panhandle. Brown purchased the
1916 land office building in 1957 with the ambition to have a Gray County
Museum. Brown died in a car accident in 1964 and never saw his dream come to
light.
Opening in 1970, the White Deer Land Museum in Pampa Texas,
has grown from the original White Deer Land Company Office building to four
buildings that house 22,000 artifacts. The mission of the Museum is to procure,
preserve, exhibit, and interpret objects which relate to the social, political,
economic, and cultural history of Gray County. Educational programs highlight
The Land, The People and Their Stories.
Our partnership with
Window on a Wider World in Amarillo opened our programs to other towns in our
area. During the 2022/2023 school year, 600 children from all over the Texas
panhandle visited the museum and learned about the Red River War of 1874-1875
and the railroads opening the Texas panhandle to be settled. Every year the museum hosts a June and
July three day summer camp for kindergarten through 6th grade, which
we partner with the Panhandle Plains Historical Museum, Caprock Canyons,
Alibates Flint Quarries, Frontier Regiment and many more. Our goal is to present
the youth with the diverse art and educational tools that we have throughout the panhandle.
From the early days of Gray County one thing has been made
clear. A community grows and thrives when people come together. Learning from
our past, both the good and bad, leads to a strong community that start with
the young. We continue to engage with our community and the surrounding Texas panhandle
to keep history alive and accessible to all.
M.K. Brown said he wanted "to give back to Gray County
all that she has given to me. When I came here, I had nothing. All that I have
came from this wonderful County and Community of mine and I plan to give it all
back." Thank you for helping us
keep M.K. Brown’s dream alive.
