Preserving, Protecting and Defending the Forests, Waterways and Wildlife in the wild heart of north central Idaho. Since 1987, Friends of the Clearwater has been protecting public wildlands through grassroots organizing, education, advocacy, and when necessary, litigation. We are a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization based in Moscow, Idaho.

Friends of the Clearwater is a science-based wildlands defense organization whose purpose is to protect and save the remaining wild nature of the Clearwater Basin and adjacent watersheds of north-central Idaho, including Wilderness, roadless areas, and habitat connectivity for large predators and other at-risk species on public lands and surrounding areas.

We conduct public outreach and education, and participate in public processes to protect core values such as healthy populations of flora, fauna and fungi plus fully functioning natural ecological processes for sequestering and storing carbon to mitigate the effects of climate change.

We also work in partnership with other activists and environmental organizations to strengthen the network of citizen conservation. We use legal pressure when necessary to hold government agencies accountable for failing to adhere to environmental laws.
