Wilderness Watch

Wilderness Watch is the leading national organization whose sole focus is the protection of lands and rivers in the National Wilderness Preservation System. We grew out of the concern that while much emphasis was being placed on adding new areas to these systems, the character of existing Wildernesses and Wild Rivers was being ignored. The appreciation and stewardship of these remarkable wild places must be assured through public education, independent citizen oversight, and litigation.

Our Defending Wilderness Program effectively influences national wilderness policies and legislation, combats threats to individual Wildernesses, supports efforts for better wilderness stewardship, including the design and implementation of pro-active campaigns, and uses litigation strategically to defend Wilderness.

Our Citizen Engagement Program effectively communicates to the public the values of Wilderness, and inspires its members and supporters to be strong wilderness activists through our print quarterly newsletter, website, action alerts, blogs, social media, and the publication of Op-Eds. Our efforts have resulted in building a strong reputation and relationships with other key activists, organizations, and agency program leaders, and serving as the leading source of information on wilderness conservation, policies, history, and stewardship.
