Women Who Write has been the go-to place for women writers since 1992, when playwright and historian, Carrider "Rita" Jones founded the organization via the University of Louisville Women's Center. She understood what women writers needed—A Place. A Space. A Voice.
We welcome aspiring, emerging and published writers from all genres. Our organization provides education and support that affirms the value of each individual’s writing journey.
~Janet L. Boyd~
“The solitary nature of writing often makes me crazy! Through Women Who Write, I have found a community of women with common interests. I have found people who wrestle, as I do, to choose the right word, build complex characters, create tension, create vivid scenes . . . We can all be a bit crazy, together!
~Kimberly Crum~
Affordability—To provide high-quality affordable programming that affirms and supports each writer’s journey.
Positivity—To promote and demonstrate positive professional attitudes toward individuals, the group, and writing in general.
Diversity—To invite, encourage, and embrace diversity and open-mindedness.
Accessibility—Remain affordable and accessible to all women who seek a community of writers.
Monthly meetings—On the second Tuesday of each month, we gather to share craft ideas, create new work, and offer strength-based peer critiques. This is where writing collaboration begins!
Writing retreats—Twice yearly, we deepen our writing lives via a day-long or overnight retreat. We write. We talk, We read aloud. We consult with our peers. So much of what we learn emerges from spontaneous conversations with fellow writers!
A monthly newsletter—This monthly missive informs, educates, and encourages new writing, announces upcoming events, provides writing prompts, and lists venues for publishing as well as external educational opportunities.
Workshops—Visiting arts professionals lead generative workshops on topics of interest to prose and poetry writers.
Public reading —Reading aloud is a central experience of the writing life. Each year, our members participate in at least one public reading.
Book fairs and festivals—We carpool to conferences and local workshops featuring authors, craft panels, and the latest literature.
A blog on our website—Members are invited to submit poetry or prose, stand-alone pieces, and excerpts to our website's blog.
