YMCA of Greater New Orleans

The YMCA of Greater New Orleans is a cause - a source and promoter of positive social change. Our mission of putting Christian principles into practice through programs that build a healthy spirit, mind, and body for all has been thriving for 169 years in the Greater New Orleans region. Our commitment toward youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility has built a strong community through our investment in our kids, our health, and our neighbors.

The YMCA of Greater New Orleans comprises five branches that serve as wellness centers, family centers, and community centers in Belle Chasse, East Jefferson, Covington, and South Plaquemines (Port Sulphur and Buras). At our branches, we are working with our youth to grow them into the leaders of tomorrow through leaders club, job training and placement, enrichment programs such as mentoring and college preparation, healthy living activities, summer camps, after-school programs, and youth sports. We offer programs for the whole family, from fitness challenges to Kids Night Out, wellness, and socialization for our active older adult members.

Beyond our community centers, we provide educational programs and group classes to promote healthier decisions and offer programs supporting physical, intellectual, and spiritual strength. Our Car Seat Safety Outreach program aids low-income members of the Hispanic community, provides occupant protection information, and distributes car safety/booster seats to needy families. We offer adaptive swim lessons and art therapy programs for autistic children and other special needs.

Meet Taven: Taven is a nine-year-old with Trisomy 21, also known as Down syndrome. In school, he is in an inclusive setting most of the day. However, the Y was the first camp he attended with most non-disabled peers. "The camp counselors treated my son with genuine love and concern. Although he experienced some challenges, the Y camp staff accommodated and cared for my son," said Octavia.
