The YMCA of Greater Pittsburgh is committed to standing beside our community's most vulnerable-especially children and seniors. As we prepare for the Critical Needs Alert, we're focused on the growing challenges these groups face every day. Thousands of families across Allegheny County struggle to find safe, affordable childcare-particularly during the summer months when school is out. Over 8,000 families with children under age five need support to ensure their kids are cared for in nurturing, developmentally appropriate environments.
At the same time, our senior population continues to face isolation, declining health, and limited access to wellness resources. The Y works every day to close these gaps, offering vital programs that support youth development, healthy aging, and community connection. From early learning and summer camp to wellness classes and senior outreach, the Y remains a trusted partner, ensuring that all generations in our region can thrive.
"My grandson came to live with us after his parents got into some trouble. We agreed to foster him but both of us work. When I found out about this day camp it seemed perfect. It was close to my work and it was paid for. It made his summer more fun. He made friends and had plenty of activities. Thanks to everyone who made it happen!"
"When I didn't have to go to work every day and my kids were out of town... there were big voids in my time when I needed to know I could go somewhere to socialize, and the YMCA filled that void. I think the YMCA not only focuses on your physical health, but your mental and psychological health."
