Black girls and LGBTQ-GNC youth of color from low-income communities lack adequate skills, supports, and resources to avoid delinquency placing them at-risk for juvenile incarceration.

One study on school suspension and expulsion revealed that Black girls account for 56% of all girls suspended from K–12 public schools in the United States and 45% of all girls expelled from such schools. Despite comprising only 14% of the general population, we hold 33.2% of Black girls detained and committed and 85% -90% of detained LGBTQ youth are youth of color. And like many of our Black women in today’s prison system, these youth have been victims of either physical or sexual violence themselves.

In response to the disproportionate minority contacts and the abuse-to-prison pipeline, in 2019 Make-It-Click created and implemented the Youth Engagement Diversion Program in an effort to lower the number of juvenile arrests for Black girls and LGBTQ-GNC youth of color. How can you help? We accept support through donations (in-kind or monetary) or volunteer work through our mentoring program.
