I believe in the power of young people, the power of camp, and the power of nature.
To sum up a bunch of long (but very cool!) research and personal experiences and witnessing moments, when young people are:
- Surrounded by caring older people and communities who believe in and support them,
- Have access to opportunities in which they can stretch and grow,
- Allowed to take up space and voice their opinions
they are POWERFUL.
And Live Oak is where all of this-- young people growing and stepping into their power-- can happen.
This summer, Live Oak Wilderness Camp (aka Live Oak aka some of my all-time favorite humans in the entire universe) is launching a new program called The Wilderness Adventure that leans into building up the power of some of my favorite young people as they explore both themselves and nature in a series of multi-day hiking trips.
For many great kids across our country, big hurdles stand in the way of enjoying time in the great outdoors. The cost of technical gear alone limits access to camping, backpacking, and wilderness adventure travel. Organized multi-day trips offered by national providers typically cost $4,000 or more. And the face of "The Outdoors" has been historically and predominantly White. All of these factors have a disproportionate impact on low-income families and young people who identify as Black, Indigenous and Latinx.
Live Oak is committed to working towards eliminating the barriers young people (specifically those who hold marginalized identities) face in accessing outside spaces and opportunities. We are raising scholarship funds to make our summer adventure trips available to outstanding Live Oak campers, no matter their backgrounds. This way they can all feel the self-confidence that comes from summiting a peak, exploring a cave, or sleeping under a starry sky.
If you believe in the power of young people, if you believe in the power of adventure, or the power of dreams, please consider donating to The Wilderness Adventure.
