Trans and queer youth of color are among the most resilient students in schools. And right now, they need spaces that affirm their identities and experiences, uplift their spirit, and promote self and community care.
Building community is now more important than ever. This school year, GSA Network is adapting their traditional school-based GSA model and expanding their Community GSA model into a virtual space. A Community GSA allows students to reach beyond their school and connect with young people across their entire community. Just like a school-based GSA club, a Community GSA can be a space to socialize, find support, and build activism. Many trans and queer students across the country are now learning in remote environments. That’s why we're working to support youth in creating Virtual Community GSAs and supporting Youth Organizing, investing in Gender Justice Leadership Programs, building a national GSA movement, and uplifting youth voices and digital organizing.
The Covid-19 global health crisis has forced all of us who work for educational justice--especially through a lens of racial and gender equity--to face just how deep the digital divide really is for Black and Brown communities. We’ve seen LGBTQ+ youth step up and overcome real barriers that prevent them from accessing technology and digital spaces--whether it’s because they just don’t have the tech needed to connect or they don’t live in supportive home environments where they are free to express themselves.
As a GSA Network Board member, I am committed to doing what I can to support this amazing organization and ensure the youth who need these programs have access to the technology they need to participate. I hope you will consider supporting my fundraising campaign and ensuring queer and trans youth of color have access to the tools they need!
