Tiny Donors Make a Big Difference!

Update posted 6 years ago

The Manatee class from Daniel Island Academy Preschool came for a field trip today. We were so touched when they surprised us with this beautiful banner and $83.47 in donations the students had personally contributed and collected to rebuild Raceways!

The Children's Museum of the Lowcountry has been vandalized.

On Saturday, October 13th, at two o'clock in the morning, three men hopped the fence, ran through the museum's backyard, and pushed over our much-loved Raceways Exhibit, completely destroying it in the process.

The Children's Museum of the Lowcountry receives 130,000 visitors on-site each year. Our visitors are mostly local children, school groups, parents, grandparents, educators, and caregivers. Our museum is only 10,400 sqaure feet and we use every inch of it to serve our community, so losing a section of our museum, even temporarily, is truly a loss.

We need to remedy this immediately. Raceways was the very first exhibit purchased for the Children’s Museum  16 years ago. It has been loved by 1.75 million children and families. Instead of just rebuilding, we want to create something new and even better. We would like to use this as an opportunity to do something great for the children and families we serve - please help us!

How you can help:

1. Click and comment on our posts about the incident on October 13th

2. Share our posts and links to our fundraising with your community

3. Make a contribution to help us rebuild something great for your kids and community!

Thank you so much to all of you who have come out to support the Children's Museum. We have received an incredible outpouring of community support around this ugly incident, and it means so much to us to know that our community is there for us.

FAQs:

Why does it cost $20,000?
We understand that's a shocking number. Museum-quality exhibits are made to endure years of play and millions of visits - but they are very expensive. This wonderful set of ramps, loops and rails will allow our children to create endless Raceways of their own design. The Ontario Science Center produces these pieces for $16,000 per set plus $1,400 in shipping. We need funds for creating our CML set and for resurfacing the play area so that they can be easily and comfortably used by all. (And just so you really know that we are not making this up, another example of a Raceways-like exhibit is available here: http://www.sciencekinetics.com/exhibits-catalog-home/race-track

How long will it take?
Once we raised the funds, CML will work with exhibit designers and fabricators to put the new Raceways together. We expect this process to take 8 - 12 weeks.

Please ask! You can contact us at community@exploreCML.org.
