This summer marks the 5th year the Alma Center’s bike team, Team Alma Riders, will pedal our way 430 miles across Iowa in RAGBRAI, raising funds for violence prevention each mile we pedal.
Our 2018 bike team is particularly special as it is growing and including more and more of the Milwaukee community! This year our team will include a federal prosecutor, a 25 year veteran of the police force, an executive director of a domestic violence victim service agency, an executive director of a victim service criminal justice agency, an executive director of an emergency service agency, an energetic healer, a bilingual psychologist, an artist from North Carolina, an Evangelical Christian, and that's not even all! The 2018 team will also include 9 men who have spent a combined total of 82 years behind bars. This year the Alma Riders will be made up of over 30 riders with more stories than ever to share with each of you!
Imagine this - never-ending corn fields, equally abundant opportunities to indulge in pie, ice cream, pork-chop on a stick, evening bonfires, and miles and miles of 30, butt-creamed bums trekking their way across the state of Iowa. What a hoot!
Why should you donate and support this outrageous endeavor?
Well, WI taxpayers have already spent more than $3.5 million dollars to punish the 9 TEAM ALMA bikers for their 82 years spent in prison. Our goal is to raise just one-percent of the amount the state of Wisconsin has already put forth. Our goal is $35,000. In supporting the men's generative choices to work to end violence in our community, you're contributing towards the vital efforts committed towards the healing taking place in Milwaukee. In riding a bike across Iowa (and camping outside) the men are stepping way outside their comfort zones and taking on a huge mental and physical challenge. In so doing, they provide a powerful example to the other men behind bars about the boundless opportunities available in their own lives upon release.
By contributing to our ride, you're helping us set an example for the Milwaukee community. By role-modeling community building, TEAM ALMA RIDERS works to lead by example, how cycles of violence can be broken - through getting to know each other. Please support our ride. Please support these men in their courageous mission to set examples for other community leaders. Please help us heal our community and change the criminal system.
To say the least - Alma Riders are taking on serious community healing work and bringing together many different stakeholders to bike, play, sweat, camp, laugh, and eat pie! We will be highlighting and promoting our story extensively through social media and traditional news outlets, so please stay tuned!
