Amazing First Week

Update posted 6 years ago

Wow, what an amazing first week! We have managed to raise nearly $3,000 towards Addison’s service dog. We want thank everyone who donated and participated in our first event, the Touchstone jewelry party. Honestly, we are so thankful and blessed to have the friends and family that we do.

We still have a long road ahead but we are confident we will be able to meet our goal. Our next event is going to be a bake sale so if you are interested in participating or donating baked treats let us know. We should have details soon.

Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your continued support.

The Starr Family.

Hi, I am Addison!  I am a happy, easygoing girl who loves my friends, family, and I also LOVE to sing and dance to any music with a good beat (especially Taylor Swift).  I play at my own pace and try to do things on my own most of the time, even though it may sometimes be difficult.  I was born with a rare genetic disorder called Tuberous Sclerosis Complex, TSC for short.  TSC causes tumors to grow on organs such as the brain, lungs, and/or kidneys.  Many people with TSC experience seizures (like me), autism, behavior issues, and learning challenges (to learn more about TSC you can visit www.tsalliance.org).  I take several medications to help me with these challenges; however, as I grow, my parents and doctors need to change my medication or how much medication I get, to help me feel better. It can be REALLY tough on me if I am taking too much or too little medication. It can also make me angry or very sad.  Sometimes this happens to me several times a day.  My anger can be overwhelming and I sometimes do things I would not normally want to do like: try to bite, pinch, or hit the people I love, including myself.  I don’t want to, but it happens and then it makes me even more upset.Music helps me, but I also LOVE dogs! They make me so happy and calm.  I love hugging, kissing, and taking care of them. They calm whatever is going on in my head and it would be amazing to have a companion of my own.  My parents would love to have a dog that can alert them or me before I have a seizure, help find me when I am being too independent, or just put me at peace when nothing else can.

I am so happy I recently was accepted into the 4 Paws for Ability program. They are a non-profit organization that raises and trains service dogs for children with disabilities like me. The program costs $40,000 -$60,000 to raise and train these amazing “best friends” that will be able to do so much to help me.  My family is looking to fundraise $17,000, the amount we are responsible for, so that 4 Paws for Ability can pick out a dog perfect for me. I am so excited at the thought of having a dog who can help when I need it the most.
