Strategic Planning Session Part 2: Vital Capacity Building

Throughout the pandemic, many of us have been struggling to make it through each day. Sometimes it feels like we are constantly in survival mode as we work to fight against the continued harms of the drug war. As leaders we are fighting for the survival of ourselves and our communities as we simultaneously experience heightened violence. This collective isolation that we have experienced over the last year has made it increasingly difficult to care for our people.

At Urban Survivors Union, our organizing is rooted in the material realities of our members. In the spirit of mutual aid, we engage both in resource sharing and offering small stipends and low threshold employment to honor each other’s time. During this public health crisis, our union has served as a network of support for our members in continuing to survive in this racist drug war.

In order to continue to make change, we need to do more than just survive--we deserve to see our communities thrive. Please make the investment we need right now in order to build power as a movement. Help us make it possible for us to set aside time to continue our leadership development so we can build capacity.

Your support will allow our members to take part in a 2 day hybrid style training that accommodates our people both virtually and in person. This will be a much-needed follow up to our USU Constitutional Convening held during the Drug Policy Alliance’s 2019 International Reform Conference in St. Louis, Missouri.

This will provide the much needed connection that so many in our community need. Organizing is based on relationships. After losing so many members in 2020, we really feel the need to gather together as a union. Help us reconnect safely in a way that allows us to properly accommodate our folks to be socially distanced.
