I was diagnosed with placenta accreta at 20 weeks with my last pregnancy. My ultrasound technician found it and I then had to be transferred to a specialist at Pavilion for Women. I was scheduled for surgery at 34 weeks, however I started to have contractions at 32 weeks. Once baby (Finn) was delivered it was discovered my placenta was not only attached to my uterus, but had also penetrated through it and had attached to my bladder. As expected, I had to have a hysterectomy with bladder repair at 40 years old.
I joined support groups and the thing that I always think about, is there are women out there that end up with a hysterectomy in their 20s. That is why I am for bringing as much awareness as I can.
Placenta accreta is a pregnancy condition in which the placenta attaches too deeply into the wall of the uterus. The risk for developing accreta increases with each c-section or uterine surgery. Placenta accreta puts the mother at risk of severe blood loss and other complications. The rates of maternal death, transfusion, prolonged hospital stay and hysterectomy are all increased for women with accreta.
I am participating to bring attention to this life-threatening pregnancy condition that currently affects 1 in 272 births. Please donate and support my efforts to raise funds for National Accreta Foundation.
