Hello everyone! I know that many of you are excited by the SCOTUS decision that came down on Monday, and rightfully should celebrate it as a huge success for the LGBTQ community. I ALSO know that many of you have pointed out the flaws in the decision - the inherent transphobia of doubling-down on "biological sex" in Gorsuch's writing, the gaps in protections that still impact members of our community, the potential fights we still would have to wage to prove that we have rights in other areas protected by federal law, and the disparity in safety, equality, and equity that our Black community members face every day.
To that end, I want you to know that I am working for an organization that is working hard to win protections against discrimination for LGBTQ+ people nationwide, and we know that the road ahead of us is a steep one, even if we can see the finish line.
Many people in the country already believe the fight is over. That's why it's especially important that we let people know: the fight is not yet won, and we need your help.
This month of Pride (or, as a friend put it, Gay Wrath Month), please consider giving any amount you can contribute. Any new gift, or increased gift from last year to Freedom for All Americans Education Fund will be matched—dollar for dollar up to $75,000—thanks to a generous challenge grant from the Gill Foundation.
I know that things are hard right now.
There's a pandemic in our midst, economic uncertainty on our horizon, and tremendous, transformational upheaval in our streets. I know that you may have many causes you care for vying for your time, attention, and resources, but please know that every donation counts, every single one matters (trust me, I know, I enter them all), and that giving is a form of activism.
If you are looking to extend your activism, here are a few of the organizations that have called to me:
