Green Tree School serves just under 200 students with special education needs. During a typical December, our school would be a bevy of activity with preparation for our winter concert and our Winter Wonderland celebration prior to the holiday break. Our Winter Wonderland is a cherished annual event for our students, where our team uses sensory integration via holiday themed activities, to support our students with practicing social skills while having fun! At the conclusion of the event, our team members and some parent volunteers would be Santa’s helpers and deliver small gifts to every student in the school.
Unfortunately, the high levels of COVID transmission in our region has required us to transition back to full remote instruction this holiday season. There will be no Winter Wonderland event this year. We also know that many families are facing financial stress during this pandemic; dire constraints that have seen food insecurity rates rise as high as 1 in every 4 children lacking adequate nutrition.
With these unprecedented events this year, we decided to launch a small fundraising campaign to help provide every family with $25 grocery gift cards this holiday season. While we may not be able to celebrate in person with our students, our team believes that these small gifts can be safely shared and help lighten the load for our families.
