Last year, workers in New Orleans won a major victory: the City Council passed a heat protection ordinance requiring paid rest breaks for city and contracted workers when the heat index reaches dangerous levels with 10-minute breaks every 2 hours at 80–89°F and 15-minute breaks at 90°F+. While this is a critical step, the fight to keep our community safe from extreme heat continues.
The “Beat the Heat” campaign is to demand that the city implement an action plan that equips neighborhoods with the resources and knowledge to survive rising temperatures. We are pushing for water stations, clear signage for cooling centers, and communication tools so residents know where to find relief when heat strikes. We also train local leaders to educate neighbors and advocate for long-term solutions, like more shade, trees, and resilient urban infrastructure.
Education and engagement are key. We hope for workshops to teach people about heat risks, early warning signs, and emergency preparedness. Public campaigns through radio, social media, texts, and newsletters to ensure everyone receives practical safety guidance, from hydration tips to recognizing heat stroke, while connecting residents to cooling centers.
By supporting this campaign, you help build a stronger safety net for New Orleans. Your contribution empowers residents, strengthens local leadership, and ensures that when heat waves hit, our communities are prepared, informed, and protected. Together, we can save lives and make the city safer for everyone.
