My name is Steph, and I'm an autistic adult with PTSD, waiting to be paired with my very own service dog from New Horizons. New Horizons, established in 1995, breeds, trains, and places service dogs with veterans, autistic children, and people with other qualifying disabilities. It's no small feat!
Service dogs can do so much-- for myself, a service dog could help soothe me when I'm overstimulated, wake me from PTSD nightmares, help me remember my meds and other sensory accommodations, keep me on a routine, and help me with the stress of transitions. Having a service dog would keep me from having to depend solely on my friends and family for daily tasks that I have difficulty completing alone, such as going to the store, getting out of bed, and other things that most people find effortless. Not to mention, a dog would be a great help in uncomfortable social situations, whether as a conversation starter or a reason to bow out gracefully.
I want to do everything I can to help New Horizons with their amazing efforts! According to their team, the average cost to train, place, and care for each service dog is $25,000. It seems like such a big number, but through fundraising, they've created a thriving service for people like me who would otherwise have to pay that on our own, all at once. Every little bit helps, even if, like me, all you can afford is a few dollars at a time. By donating, you're not only helping me get my dog, you're supporting the heroes at New Horizons!
