Agatha Has a Lungworm Infection!

Update posted 1 year ago

Agatha can't catch a break! After going back into the vet and starting new medication a couple of weeks ago, she wasn't bouncing back like she should have. Her breathing was still rapid and irregular, she wasn't eating or putting on weight like a growing kitten should. Another trip to the vet and additional tests have shown that Agatha has a severe lungworm infection. Lungworm infections can lead to respiratory distress and even failure! An IV was put in to get her stable and start her on new medication to treat the infection. In addition, she also has a rare intestinal parasite. Please help Agatha finally start feeling better, she's had a hard, long road.

UPDATE:

Agatha now has a serious case of Pneumonia and is fighting to breathe. We got Agatha off the island but she was still struggling and after an emergency follow-up, she has been found to be fighting for her breath. Please donate so we can get her the ongoing, lifesaving care she needs!

Being a kitten outdoors is hard enough. But for Agatha it was about to be deadly. Born outdoors on Block Island, Rhode Island she was recently seen sauntering around with no other kitties and looking very skinny. No traps for were working and a local rescuer was worried she might be in dire straights. Turns out, she was. In her weakened state, a local dog flushed her out of the thorny brush that covers the island and into the hands of the dog's owner who quickly delivered her to a rescuer.Agatha spends most of her day sleeping as her little body fights to hold on

HT Executive Director, Sue is on the island and connected with the local cat rescue - an amazing one woman show named Amy! She reached out to take Sue up on her offer to take in any kitten needing rehabbing.

Poor Agatha was skin and bones. She was so dehydrated that she could barely walk and keep her head up. Eating was almost too much of a chore. And yet when she was cuddled, she purred non-stop even though she had never been touched by humans. She was so lethargic that, as a feral kitten, she couldn't even hiss or fight against the strange and weird humans cuddling her and feeding her.

Luckily, she was able to get fluids and some Pepcid to calm her belly. With no veterinarian on the island, the first need was to triage her to get her through the night. With 36 hours of fluids she slowly started to eat and perk up. But then shortly after and overnight, she would throw up all of her food and an involuntary movement of her neck and persistent cough started to suggest a potentially more serious esophageal problem.   Perking up for some vertical feeding so she can keep her food down

We are now rushing her to get seen by a mainland vet asap to see if she will need more extensive specialist care. But first, we have to fly her off the island as the ferries and one veterinarian appointment are not lining up. Don't worry - the cost of her 10 min flight to the mainland is only $25 but her vet costs will certainly be more - exam, x-ray, meds and likely additional lifesaving diagnostics.

This is her chance. Had she not been flushed out of the brush she would be dead. We have no doubt. Her dehydrated state, skin and bones and the freezing overnight temps would have done her in. We are SO grateful to have her now but need to get her healthy as soon as possible.

She purrs non-stop when being cuddled despite having never been touched by peopleA donation of any amount will help.
