Al Nykamp
Transplant Type: Liver
Update: Al received a transplant on January 14, 2020!
Al Nykamp is fighting for his life. In the 1970’s, he had surgery and received tainted blood during the procedure. As a result, he became infected with Hepatitis C. Now, Al has severe liver disease. His condition leaves him tired and takes a toll on his quality of life. Doctors say a liver transplant is critical.
During this difficult time, Al is grateful for the love and support of his wife, Kerri, and their family and friends. Al and Kerri have three children and five grandchildren, and Al’s illness prevents him from being the active husband, father, and grandfather he longs to be. Al looks forward to receiving a transplant that will save his life and allow him to feel like himself again. He used to enjoy camping, hiking, playing with his grandsons, and serving as a softball umpire, but his declining health prevents him from being active now. Al wants nothing more than to be healthy so he can spend more quality time with his family, resume the activities he once enjoyed, and live a more normal life. But right now he needs your help.
Unfortunately, Al’s hope for a new life comes at a very high price.
The average liver transplant costs approximately $740,000, and that’s only the beginning. Even with insurance, which will cover a portion of the transplant costs, he still faces significant expenses related to the surgery. For the rest of his life, he will need follow-up care and expensive anti-rejection medications. Post-transplant medications are as critical to his survival as the transplant itself.
Al lives 150 miles from his transplant center and traveling back and forth for appointments can be expensive. When he receives his transplant, he will have to stay nearby while he recovers, incurring substantial expenses for travel, food, and lodging.
